How CONNECTED are you?
We live in a heavily tech dominant society, in some way this has made communication is so easy and accessible as it is literally at our fingertips. For me personally I don't know how I would have coped with the 'lockdown' and house arrest without the ability to connect to my family and friends. In some ways I feel I have strengthened relationships even more during this time as I have actually had the time to commit to them compared to normal which is almost a dichotomy in itself.
Literally from your home in St (opt for necessary parish) Brelades, Peter, Ouen, Mary, John, Trinity, Martin, Lawrence, Helier, Saviour, Grouville or St Clement you could be chatting, texting, gaming, instagramming, snapchatting with someone on the other side of the world!
This new revolution and use of technology has brought about great advances but also has brought with it a lot of alarmingly serious health concerns for its consumer and particularly our next generation.
Text neck, nintendonitis, wii-itis, gamers thumb? These are all injuries gained from using your phone, tablet, laptop or games console. During this period I have heard numerous stories of people working off their laptop in bed for the last two months, kitchen stools/table, sofa and ironing boards (which isn't actually a bad move) but our spines have certainly been compromised without our usual luxuries of office chairs, ergonomically assessed desks, and at one point during the lockdown a lot of time/excuse to move and exercise.
The average usage was 171 minutes per day pre lockdown and some people have noticed that their averages have increased by 200% on their phones and that’s not making calls. That’s 6 hours a day on average!
Based off 'normal times and usage' (pre-lockdown) the time amounts to being over 33 days a year that you will spend staring at your phone. If you include the average 2 hours and 12 minutes spent on computers and 4 hours spent in front of the TV each day that’s another 90 days, that equates to 123 days a year in which we are totally absorbed on technology, would you say that that is a considerable amount of time? This, for some is actually more time on devices than sleeping!
Going back to the title of 'How connected are you' the reason why I am writing about connection is because it is very closely related to the philosophy of chiropractic.
Chiropractic is about getting the electricity from your central nervous system (brain) connecting with your peripheral nervous system (rest of your body). Before thinking about being connected with others I think its good to start with yourself, and one way to connect with yourself is by aligning your body so it connects and speaks to itself with its 'strongest signal'.
Chiropractic care is all about you, your body, your connection and your power. I hope this time has allowed for some deep reflection on your connection whether that be 'from a looking within' or connecting with others.
With Love,
Amanda
